CERTIFICATE IN CATHOLIC THEOLOGY

The purpose of the Certificate in Catholic Theology at is to provide students with a course of study in the area of the foundations of Catholic theology. This course of study constitutes a partial fulfillment of the requirements for archdiocesan professional certification of lay ministers, and it may be used as a component of the Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.) degree or the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree.  This course of study is available in English and Spanish.

BASIC DIPLOMA IN MUSIC MINISTRY

The purpose of the Basic Undergraduate Diploma Program in Music Ministry at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide students with a course of study in the area of liturgical music ministry.

BASIC DIPLOMA IN CATHOLIC THEOLOGY

The purpose of the Undergraduate Pastoral Ministry Program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide students with a course of study in the area of the foundations of Catholic theology and ministry. This course of study constitutes a partial fulfillment of the requirements for archdiocesan certification of volunteers and professionals in ministry, and it may be used as a component of the Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.) degree or the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN MINISTRY (A.A.M.)

The Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.) degree is designed to provide its recipients with an undergraduate liberal arts/vocational degree in a two-year format in the area of Christian Ministry.

BACHELOR OF ARTS (A.B.)

The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide an undergraduate liberal arts degree in a four-year format with a major in philosophy or pastoral theology.

BACHELOR OF PHILOSOPHY (B. PHIL)

The purpose of the Bachelor of Philosophy program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide an undergraduate degree in a two-year format with a major in philosophy for students who already possess a bachelor’s degree.

Graduate Programs

Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry

The purpose of the Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide its graduates with a graduate diploma that verifies the completion of a 30 or 31 credit hour course of study. This course of study constitutes a partial fulfillment of the requirements for archdiocesan certification and may be used as a component of the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (M.A.P.S.) degree.

MASTER OF ARTS IN PASTORAL STUDIES (M.A.P.S.)

Graduate degree that integrates the intellectual, personal, spiritual and ministerial goals with the theological disciplines of Roman Catholic faith and tradition.

MASTER OF ARTS IN THEOLOGY (M.A.)

Graduate degree that integrates the theological disciplines of Roman Catholic faith and tradition.

MASTER OF DIVINITY (M.DIV.)

Graduate degree program specifically for men preparing for priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

BACCALAUREATE IN SACRED THEOLOGY (S.T.B.)

The Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) degree offered by Sacred Heart Major Seminary is an ecclesiastical degree conferred by the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (Angelicum) through the faculty of SHMS.

POST GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

The purpose of the Post Graduate Certificate is to provide a way for those who already have an MA, MAPS, or MDIV degree an opportunity to do some substantial study in the New Evangelization without enrolling in the STL program. It is designed for those who do not have the prerequisites to enroll in the STL program or do not have the time/desire to complete another degree. In addition, at the discretion of the Dean of Studies, the Certificate may be granted to a student who was admitted into the STL program but was not able to complete it successfully.

LICENTIATE IN SACRED THEOLOGY (S.T.L.)

The S.T.L. degree offered by Sacred Heart Major Seminary is a post-graduate ecclesiastical degree in pastoral theology with a focus on the New Evangelization. The Pontifical University of St. Thomas (The Angelicum) in Rome confers the degree through the faculty of SHMS.

PERMANENT DIACONATE

Any man interested in becoming a Permanent Deacon should contact the Office of Clergy and Consecrated Life of the Archdiocese of Detroit for information about the application process and formation program.

Academic preparation for those pursuing ordination as Permanent Deacons is accomplished through courses offered at SHMS. Men aspiring to the permanent diaconate must complete prerequisite course work during their time of discernment. Men accepted into the permanent diaconate program must meet both the academic requirements of SHMS and the formational requirements of the Permanent Diaconate Program. Academic programs can be completed at the graduate or undergraduate level.
