Michael J. McCallion received his Ph.D. in sociology from Wayne State University in Detroit and his M.A. in liturgy/theology from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.  He is an STL faculty member at Sacred Heart Major Seminary where he holds the Rev. William Cunningham Chair in Catholic Social Analysis.  He is primarily interested in the sociology of religion, spending whatever time he can studying Catholic liturgical worship and the New Evangelization from that perspective.  His wife Catherine and he reside in Clinton Township, Michigan.  They have three adult children, and belong to St. Peter's Church in Mt. Clemens.

Dr. McCallion teaches the undergraduate course Sociology of Religion as well as the following graduate courses in the STL program: 1) Family - School of Evangelization (STL 908); 2) Catholic Devotional Practices and the New Evangelization (STL 877-01), and 3) Social and Cultural Analysis in the New Evangelization (STL 974).  He has team taught the course Pastoral Care Across Cultures with Sr. Mary Lou Putrow and has taught The Formation of Christian Community as well.  He has taught sociology of religion courses at Wayne State University and Oakland University over the years.  His academic publications have appeared in the Review of Religious Research, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Journal for the Scientific Study of Symbolic Interaction, Contemporary Sociology, Journal of Sociology and Anthropology, Antiphon: A Journal for Liturgical Renewal, and in the Encyclopedia of Sociology (2006: Blackwell Publishing). He has a book chapter in Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change and another chapter in Faultline of Consciousness: A Review of Interactionism in Sociology.  He has presented several papers at sociological conferences, the latest being at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion in 2016 on the sociology of the New Evangelization and a more recent paper on Liturgy and Post-Modernism at the Society for Catholic Liturgy annual conference (Philadelphia).  He has written two books: Transforming Catholicism: Liturgical Change and the Vatican II Church (2007: Lexington Books) and The New Evangelization in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, Michigan: A Sociological Report (2015: Edwin Mellen Press).  Two recent articles he has published are 1) "An Institutional and Status Analysis of Youth Ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit," in the journal Religions (2016), and "New Evangelization Practices: Devotions, Meetings, and Christian Service," in the journal Sociology and Anthropology (2017).
