Sr. Mary Louise Putrow, OP

Bio / Information: 

Sr. Putrow is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Adrian.  She has served at Sacred Heart Major Seminary since 1988.

She graduated from Siena Heights College (now University) with a B.A. in Latin and received an M.A. from Siena in Guidance and Counseling. She also received an M.A. in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Adult and Continuing Education. In addition she has taken courses at Notre Dame University and the University of Michigan.

Sr. Putrow served the Archdiocese of Detroit in elementary and secondary education.  She taught Math, Latin and Religion at St. Agatha in Detroit and St. Alphonsus in Dearborn. At both schools she also served as Guidance Counselor. Sister was a DRE at St. Agatha Parish and  Director of Faith Formation at St. Blase in Sterling Heights, with particular responsibility for Adult Faith Formation.

Before coming to Sacred Heart she served in leadership with the  Dominican Sisters for twelve years, eight of which were spent in supervision of ministries outside of continental  United States. This latter assignment provided a rich background for teaching the class, Pastoral Care Across Cultures.

For over twenty years she has been engaged in catechist formation for the Archdiocesse. Sister was on the Bishops' advisory committee for the National Directory for Catechesis published in 2005.

Her area of research is focused on those persons, particularly the women, who have significantly contributed to the development of the field of catechesis. She has published in Religious Education  (Josephine VanDyke Brownson) and Living Light (EllaMay Horan) and has developed several entries in the online encyclopedia of Christian educators of the 20th century (CE20).  She also chairs the Catholic Committee for CE20. At present she is engaged in developing the entry on Alphonso Nebreda SJ for a new Encyclopedia of Christian Educators.
