Awardees Honored at Alumni Day 2012

The weather was graciously mild for mid-February (remember last year’s snow storm?) as 160 alumni and their family and friends gathered at the seminary to celebrate Alumni Day 2012, Sunday, February 19.

As always, attendees came to honor the achievements of the award winners. But also they met the new alumni association board members and the new alumni director, Fr. Richard Perfetto (SHS 1962); prayed at a moving vespers service led by the seminary rector; and had a cocktail or two while catching up with old classmates at the pre dinner reception.

Attendees enjoyed dinner in the gymnasium (beef tenderloin, salmon or chicken piccatta—and a desert bar!) at tables featuring sprays of spring flowers.

Pope Appoints Dr. Martin to Pontifical Council

In the winter 2011 issue of Mosaic, readers learned about three members of the Sacred Heart faculty who are serving or who have recently served on councils or commissions of the Holy See—Dr. Janet Smith, Dr. Edward Peters and Fr. John McDermott, SJ.

Now a fourth faculty member has been selected for such an honor. On December 7, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Dr. Ralph Martin as a consultor on the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization.

A consultor is a specialist in his or her field who gives assistance to the Holy Father and the Roman Curia on particular issues.

Monsignor Lajiness to Assume Seminary Rectorship on May 5

The entire seminary community filled the Bishop Gallagher Parlor on the afternoon of February 13 to hear Archbishop Allen Vigneron make the announcement all had been waiting for. Who would succeed beloved and respected Msgr. Jeffrey Monforton as the next rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary?

Monsignor had informed the community on December 5 that he would be completing his six-year tenure as rector and president on May 5, and had been appointed pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Rochester, the archdiocese’s largest parish.
