Online Courses at SHMS

Sacred Heart Major Seminary will offer one undergraduate level course – Introduction to Theology (THE 123) – during Fall 2013 semester.


Course Content

The course serves as an introduction to the undergraduate study of theology and pastoral ministry. Its scope includes an introduction to the sources and resources of theology, the major doctrines of the Catholic Church and an introduction to theological method.


Tuition and Fees

The total cost of the course is $794 for tuition for two credit hours, plus a $30 admissions fee (if a new student) and the $50 registration fee.


Student Expectations

Students who wish to take an online course must have access to the internet, whether through a personal electronic device or through a public library. They should be comfortable with accessing documents and posting comments online. Please note this is not a correspondence-style, work-at-your-own-pace course; students will be expected to keep up with regular weekly reading and posting requirements.


Can I get financial aid?

There are many financial aid opportunities! If you are doing any catechetical work (i.e. teaching religious education, RCIA, youth ministry) at a parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit, you will be eligible for the Archdiocesan Catechetical Leaders award which provides up to 45% of the tuition cost. How do I sign up for the class?

  • Complete an online Application for Admission. Be sure to complete all the required fields and click the Submit button at the end of the form.
  • Request official transcripts (not student copies) from every past academic institution you have attended to be sent directly to: Admissions Office 2701 W. Chicago Blvd. Detroit, MI 48206
  • Set up a phone interview with an Admissions representative, (313) 883-8769. During the interview, you will be asked about your faith journey and the ministries and other volunteer work you have done at the parish and other organizations. Once we have received all your admissions materials, your file will be submitted to the Admissions Committee. Students will be notified of their acceptance via email and via letter. Students will also receive information on how to register online, pay fees, utilize the library, and take the online tutorial.


Is there an admissions deadline?

Yes! In order to be admitted and register for the course, we will need all the above materials by December 7, 2012.
