Desert Golf Classic
Could You Golf “Fore” the Seminarians?
It can be cloudy and a little chilly sometimes—and it’s been known to rain. But the weather doesn’t matter much to participants of the Desert Classic golf outing. Golfers always show up with eagerness to support Sacred Heart’s seminarians. And show up they did on Monday, September 14, 2014, at The Inn at St. John’s golf course in Plymouth, Michigan.
For the annual event, now approaching its thirty-third year, a near-record 150 golfers in thirty-three teams, shanked, sliced, and divot-ed their way through eighteen holes, all to help fund the Desert Formation Experience, a program unique to Sacred Heart among U.S. seminaries.
The Desert Formation Experience is the thirty-day spiritual pilgrimage first-year graduate seminarians make each year, traditionally to the Holy Land. During this time of grace, the men witness firsthand the places Jesus walked while seeking his guidance in their own walk toward the priesthood. Lately, because of the distress in the Middle East, the men instead have made pilgrimage to the holy shrines of Western Europe, seeking the intercession of the great saints of the Church. (Learn about the 2014 pilgrimage in images and prose at the seminarian blogsite desertformation.org.
Desert Classic participants enjoy more than just golfing. A continental breakfast bar opens an hour before tee-time. A cocktail hour and dinner await the hungry and thirsty golfers after the eighteenth hole. The evening includes a fishbowl raffle and prizes awarded to the lucky winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin and Accuracy Shot contests. Another value-added benefit to the dinner: it’s the perfect venue for bragging about your golf game to your friends.
This year’s Desert Classic will be held on Monday, September 21, again at the Inn at St. John’s. Would you like to form a team and be a part of the Desert Classic in support of Sacred Heart’s seminarians? (We especially are looking for new teams of women golfers to show up the men.) The format is distinct: There are five players on a team with a priest serving as team captain in an eighteen-hole scramble.
To register, please download our registration form (click here), or contact Emily Berschback, event manager, at 313-596-7424 or email@example.com. The price for this year’s outing remains the same as last year: $125 for priests ($45 is tax deductible) and $300 for each lay team member ($220 is tax deductible). Would you consider being a sponsor of the Desert Classic? Sponsors will be recognized prominently as champions of the seminarians with an individual greens poster and in the event program. Just contact Emily Berschback for more information.
