Our Lady Returns to Campus

On October 7, the memorial day of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Sacred Heart community celebrated the return of the Virgin Mary to the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in the southeast corner of the seminary property. Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn celebrated Mass, and Dominican Fr. Juan-Diego Brunetta from the Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, gave an inspiring homily on Our Lady.

The community advanced from the Mass in solemn procession to the grotto, where the beautiful new statue made by sculptor Edward Chesney could be seen looking out at the seminary with a smile.

After the grotto was rededicated and named, "Our Lady of Detroit and Mother of All People," the celebration continued with a festive dinner.

Fr. Ed Farrell, resident priest and spiritual director at the seminary, spearheaded the effort to return Our Lady to the grotto, which had been vandalized during the riots of 1967. For thirty-seven years, a remnant of the old statue, a pair of hands, sat on his desk. Now, through the generosity of his friends, family and members of his 1953 graduating class, not to mention through the talent and devotion of Mr. Chesney, Our Lady is back. Sacred Heart now has a new place to pray and to give glory to Christ by honoring his mother.

Father Farrell believes that the return of Our Lady's statue on campus is a sign of good things for the seminary, and Mr. Chesney agrees: "I know that the Blessed Mother is trying to bless this whole Sacred Heart community."
