A Walk Around Town for Diversity
It is not often (only once a year) that the people of Detroit get together to walk eight miles around the town. October 10 saw people of many sizes, shapes, colors and talents walking a route through the streets of Detroit and Highland Park for WALK 2004, sponsored by Focus:HOPE. The Detroit-based, nationally recognized civil and human rights organization asked the seminary to celebrate diversity at this year's walk, and the Sacred Heart community was happy to oblige.
Over twenty seminarians and faculty represented Sacred Heart at the event. Some of them ran or walked the eight-mile course, some encouraged others from the sidelines, and some even shared their musical talents with the walkers. Among the music-makers was theology faculty member Fr. John Kasza, who played beautiful flute music with the Westminster Consort, and Cathy Prowse, wife of Dr. Ron Prowse, director of music at Sacred Heart, who led talented young drummers from the Maples Elementary School Arabic Music Ensemble.
College seminarian Brian Buckley ran the course and finished in second place (about a quarter mile behind a man training for a marathon), meeting several people in the process. He saw the walk as a great opportunity to witness Christ without words, for Our Lord was unafraid of diversity. "Christ talked to everyone. He didn't exclude anyone and neither should we," explained Brian.
