Dr. Philip Blosser
, professor of philosophy, published Advancing Phenomenology: Essays in Honor of Lester Embree, Contributions to Phenomenology, No. 62 (Springer, 2010), which he co-edited with Thomas Nenon. He contributed a chapter in that volume, "Can a Schelerian ethic be grounded in the heart without losing its head?" He reviewed Tradition: Concept and Claim, by Joseph Pieper, translated by E. Christian Kopff (St. Augustine's Press, 2010), in New Oxford Review (November 2010); Good and Evil Actions: A Journey through Saint Thomas Aquinas, by Steven J. Jenson (Catholic University of America Press, 2010), in CHOICE: Current Review for Academic Libraries (November 2010); and presented "H. G. Stoker's Phenomenology of Conscience," annual meeting of the American Catholic Philosophical Association, Baltimore, MD, November 5-7.

Fr. Richard Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, published Luke-Acts and Empire for the Princeton Theological Monograph Series, to honor Prof. Robert L. Brawley in a "Festschrift" at the time of his retirement. He wrote the principal essay for this book, "Paul's Proclamation of Lord Jesus as a Chained Prisoner in Rome: Luke's Ending Is in His Beginning."

David Conrad, adjunct instructor of theology, gave these presentations: "Setting the Stage: A Real Encounter with Sacred Scripture is Anything but Tame," September 26; "A Rumor of Angels," October 7; "Celebrating Biblical Saints," October 24; and "The Cathedral of Chartres of Jesus' Birth," November 28, St. Aidan Parish, Livonia, MI.

Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, professor of spirituality and systematic theology, gave these presentations: "Seasons of Life, Seasons of Faith," Fr. Gerard Martin Pastoral Ministry Conference, August 3; "Balanced, Whole and Holy, Amid the Hurry, Stress and Busyness of Everyday Life," St. Fabian Parish, August 3; Keynote address, "Weaving Faith and Experience," St. Francis University Sixth Annual Bishop Imesch Women in the Church Lecture Series, September 8; "How We Partner in Developing Our Children's Faith," St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, September 29; Keynote address, "Seasons of Life, Seasons of Faith," Diocese of Grand Rapids Women's Conference, October 14; "Weaving Faith and Experience," St. Joseph Parish, October 14; "Jesus' Spirituality as the Pattern of Our Own," Detroit Chapter of Legatus, October 28; "Weaving Faith and Experience," Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, November 4; Keynote address, "Lay Ecclesial Ministry: Becoming Fruitful," Diocese of Lansing; Advent Retreat Day, St. John's Episcopal Church, December 4.

Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, updated or authored twenty-one entries for the 2010 supplement to the New Catholic Encyclopedia and the forthcoming 2011 supplement. He presented "The Natural Law," faculty orientation, Ave Maria School of Law, Naples, FL, August 12, and "The Theology of Creation: Angels and Men," St. John the Baptist Parish, Ypsilanti, MI, October 17. He attended the conference of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists, Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, IN, where he gave a paper on the 2009 document on natural law of the International Theological Commission, October 22-23.

Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, gave these presentations: "The Gospel of Mark," Cathedral of St. Paul, St. Paul, MN, September 21; "A Vision for Catholic Women's Education," O'Meara Ferguson Symposium, Chicago, IL, October 22; "Entering the Holy of Holies," Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth, MI, November 5; and "Original Sin," St. John the Baptist Parish, Ypsilanti, MI, November 7. She was interviewed on Catholic Answers Live, EWTN radio network, on the spiritual interpretation of Scripture and the new apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini, November 12.

Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, taught two short courses to the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, India, "The Paschal Mystery" and "The Mystery of the Church," August 2-11, and two short courses to the sisters in the formation program of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, India, on Christology to the tertian formation program, and on the Paschal Mystery to the novitiate formation program, August 12-18. In September, he published "Relating Christus Sacerdos and Christus Mediator in St. Augustine's S. Dolbeau 26," Studia Patristica, vol. XLIX (Peeters, 2010).

Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, co-edited Thomas Aquinas' Commentary on the Gospel of John (Catholic University of America Press), published in August. He presented a four-talk series on ecumenism, University Christian Outreach, Kalamazoo, MI, August 18-20; published "Christology in Cyril and Leo: Unnoticed Parallels and Ironies," Studia Patristica, vol. 48 (Peeters, 2010); "Cyril of Alexandria and Nestorius of Constantinople," The Blackwell Companion to the Theologians, ed. Ian S. Markham, vol. 1 (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009); presented "Principles of Catholic Ecumenism," Work of Christ community, Lansing, MI, September 18; live-link class reviewing Deification and Grace, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, October 12; and presented "Ten Commandments," St. John the Baptist Parish, Ypsilanti, November 21.

Fr. Todd Lajiness, dean of studies, contributed an essay, "Dei Verbum as the Framework for the Dialogue Between Intellectual and Spiritual Formation," seminar sponsored by the Institute for Priestly Formation, September 12-15. The book will be published this spring. He functioned as ATS/NEASC co-chair for the comprehensive institutional accreditation visit for St. John Seminary, Brighton, MA, November 7-10. He completed the Deroit Free Press Marathon with Fr. Michael Byrnes, October 17.

Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology, published "The Dignity of the Person: An Overview and Commentary on Dignitas Personae," The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly (Summer 2010). He presented "Sacred Scripture," an RCIA presentation, St. Frances Cabrini Parish, Allen Park, MI, October 3; "The Election, Life Issues, and the Culture of Life," Legatus, St. Ambrose Parish, Detroit, MI, October 26; "What Is Marriage? The Catholic Vision of the Couple," St. Thomas More Parish, Troy, MI, November 14. He was the featured interview as the Catholic Celebri-TEA of the month of September, a Catholic online tea company (mycatholictea.com). He continues to direct a number of MA theses, maintain his Facebook blog, consult on moral issues and assist with leading the Men's Group at St. Frances Cabrini Parish.

Ralph Martin, assistant professor of theology, was involved in these outreaches: August 23-30, Ignatian retreat, Institute for Priestly Formation, Omaha, NB; September 7-17, television production of twenty-six new programs of The Choices We Face; September 17-18, Diocesan Catechetical Conference, two talks on evangelization and catechetics, Nashville, TN; September 27-November 22, eight-week course on "Foundations of Evangelization and Catechetics," Regional Coordinators of Catechetics and of Young Adult Ministry, Archdiocese of Detroit; October 2, Families for Christ National Conference, two talks on family life, Cleveland, OH; October 22-23, "Renewal in the Spirit," Diocesan Conference, four talks on holiness and evangelization, Louisville, KY; October 28, November 4, mini-retreat "Appropriating the Graces of Pentecost," Archdiocese of Detroit Central Services; November 14-18, retreat for Fraternity of Priests, seven talks, Enders Island, CT; November 19, Oakland Vicariate Lecture Series, "The Fulfillment of All Desire," St. Hugo of the Hills Parish, Bloomfield Hills, MI. He attended periodic meetings of the Archdiocese of Detroit School Board.

Fr. John McDermott, SJ, professor of theology, attended the meeting of the USCCB Doctrine Committee, Baltimore, MD, November 14. He published "How Are Physics and Metaphysics Related?" Faith Magazine (November-December 2010), and "La Libertą personale e il Magistero ordinario," Custodi e Interpreti della Vita, ed. Lucetta Scaraffia (Lateran University, 2010).

Dr. Janet E. Smith, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics, published "What Does the Holy Father Say About Condoms in His New Book?" Catholic World Report, online, November 20; "The Need to Read Carefully: A Response to Alice vonHildebrand's Critique of Christopher West," Catholic Exchange, October 18 (catholicexchange. com); "Engaging Dawn Eden's Thesis," Catholic Education Resource Center, October 5 (catholiceducation.org); Obedience vs. Conscience, National Catholic Register, August 20. She gave these talks: Retreat for Catholic Lawyers Guild, Dewitt, MI, November 13; "An Introduction to Natural Law," St. John the Baptist Parish, Ypsilanti, October 31; "Right to Privacy," Genesee Right to Life, Grand Blanc, MI, October 26; "Culture of Life vs. Culture of Death," Board of Trustees Retreat, SHMS, October 15; "Contraception: Why Not?" Fr. Daniel Trapp, graduate spiritual director, participated in the annual seminar for seminary theologians, Creighton University, sponsored by the Institute for Priestly Formation, presenting "Affective Maturity is Seminary Formation," September 10-13. He coordinated the planning for the meeting of the Federation of Seminary Spiritual Directors, Cleveland, OH, on the theme "Inner Healing," October 21-24.

Dr. Peter S. Williamson, Adam Cardinal Maida Chair in Sacred Scripture, published a book he co-edited, The Gospel of Matthew, in the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture. He attended the annual meeting of the Catholic Biblical Association, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA, presenting "Progress Report: Scripture Across the Curriculum," August 1-3, and gave an in-service day to the faculty of St. Vincent Seminary on "Scripture Across the Curriculum," August 27. He presented: "The Power and Presence of God in Scripture," Orientation Day of the Catholic Biblical School of Michigan, August 28; "Giving Our Whole Lives to God," annual retreat of The Word of God, Grass Lake, MI, October 23; "The Holy Spirit in the Life of a Catholic," AOD chancery staff, October 28; and gave an evening of training to Life in the Spirit Seminar team members, November 5. He was interviewed on radio by Teresa Tomeo about the Catholic Biblical School, August 5; by Shawn Harriot about "Knowledge of God in Ephesians," September 9 and about Francis of Assisi, October 5; and by Marcus Grodi on "Scriptures I Never Noticed in Ephesians," November 3. He recounted the story of his becoming a Catholic on EWTN's The Journey Home, November 22, and attended the annual meeting of Society of Biblical Literature, Atlanta, GA, November 19-23.
