Dr. Philip Blosser, professor of philosophy,presented: "Von Hildebrand's Critique of Scheler's Ethics," Philosophy Club at SHMS, February 20; "Wojtyla vs. Kant: Do we lose ourselves when we give ourselves to another in sex and marriage," Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas, March 4; and "The Western legal tradition, its contemporary crisis, and Pauline diagnosis," Ave Maria School of Law, Ann Arbor, Michigan, March 20.

Fr. Richard J. Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, presented "Perspectives on St. Mark's Gospel," Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor, December. He presented "St. Paul: Persecutor, Apostle, Prisoner, Martyr," at these locations in early 2009: St. John and Paul (Clinton Township); St. Mary and Monroe Vicariate (Monroe); Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary; St. Mary Queen of Creation (New Baltimore); St. Priscilla (Livonia); St. Bernardine (Westland); St. Mary (St. Clair); St. Joseph and Downriver Vicariate (Wyandotte); and St. Peter (Mt. Clemens). He presented "St. Paul and Women," Archdiocesan Women's Luncheon, SHMS, February.

Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, associate professor of spirituality and systematic theology, was on sabbatical, January-May 2009. She presented two workshops, "Women, St. Paul and the Ministry of Evangelization," Lessons From St. Paul for the New Evangelization conference, SHMS, March 21, and was a featured speaker for a week-long mission, "Onward to the Kingdom: Becoming Church, 2009," North Macomb Vicariate, March 15-19.

Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy, presented: "'The New Man': Nature, Sin and Grace in St. Paul," lecture series on Natural Law, Ave Maria School of Law, Ann Arbor, February 26; "The Calling of the Laity," St. Linus Parish, Dearborn Heights, Michigan, February 23; "The Love that Never Ends: A Key to Deus Caritas Est," Lenten reflections, Catholic Lawyers Society, SHMS, April 1; "Revelation, Experience, and Theological Language," Conference on Revelation and Philosophy, Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey, April 17-18.

Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, published a review of Believe Not Every Spirit: Possession, Mysticism & Discernment in Early Modern Catholicism by Moshe Sluhovsky, The Historian, fall 2008. He gave two lectures on the history of the Catholic Church to senior honor students at Salem High School, Canton, Michigan, December 17, and presented a paper "The Roman Missal and Papal Authority," annual conference of the Society for Catholic Liturgy, St. Cecilia Cathedral, Omaha, Nebraska, January 30-31. Febuary 9, he was on a panel discussing the Common Word Initiative between Christians and Muslims, University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Febuary 28-March 1, he was a speaker at the study and prayer conference, "Catholics in Early America," Miles Christi Institute, Gabriel Richard High  School, Ann Arbor. March 3, he gave a talk on "The Spirituality of Vatican II," Southwest Oakland Vicariate, St. Mary Parish, Royal Oak, Michigan. March 27, he moderated a Muslim-Christian theology panel that was part of the Rudolph C. Barnes Sr. Symposium on "Theory and Practice of A Common Word," University of South Carolina School of Law, Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Fastiggi has been lecturing on Catholic theological anthropology for the novices and postulants of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, Ann Arbor, continues to conduct theology classes at St. Joseph Chaldean Parish, Troy, Michigan, and has been teaching a class on Catholic social doctrine one Saturday a month, Institute for Pastoral Theology, Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida.

Fr. Marc A. Gawronski, adjunct instructor in liturgy and sacraments, spoke at the conclusion the Lenten series, St. Andrew Parish, Rochester, Michigan, on "The Spirituality of the Mass," April 2.

Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, received the 2009 Servant of the Word Award from the Denver Catholic Biblical School, where she presented "The Synod of Bishops and a New Paradigm for Biblical Interpretation," and also gave a one-day workshop on the Gospel of Mark, January 30-31. She presented "God So Loved the World" and "God Has Given Us a Spirit of Sonship," youth rally in Mbarara, Uganda, January 8-11. She presented a paper "Aquinas' Use of the Old Testament in His Commentary on Romans," Ave Maria University, February 7; gave a oneday retreat on the charisms and the New Evangelization, leaders conference, Queens, New York, March 7, and presented a keynote address, "Hope Does Not Disappoint Us,"  Co-Workers in the Vineyard conference for lay ecclesial ministers, Boston, Massachusetts, March 20. She gave these talks: "Digging for Gold in the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of John," St. Gerald Parish, Farmington, Michigan, December 15-16; "Puddleglum and the Theology of the Body," St. Augustine Institute faculty and students, Denver, Colorado, January 31; "Knowing Christ and the Power of His Resurrection," St. Paul on the Lake parish mission, Grosse Pointe, Michigan, March 10; two workshops on "St. Paul and Evangelization in the Power of the Holy Spirit," SHMS, March 21. She was interviewed on Relevant Radio in January, February and March. Her Q&A articles "Laying On of Hands" and "The Use of Blessed Oil by the Laity," appeared in the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal newsletter, and her article "Discernement et accompagnement des charismes" was published in the book Dons et charismes dans la foi et la vie de l'Eglise (Editions des Béatitudes, 2009). 

Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, presented: "It Is No Longer I Who Live, but Christ Who Lives in Me," SHMS Staff Formation Day, February 19; "Mysterium Caritatis: The Mystery of the Divine Charity," Lenten reflection series, St. Michael Parish, Livonia, Michigan, March 18; and "Death and Life are in the Power of
the Tongue (Proverbs 18:21)," Catholic Central Mother's Club Evening of Reflection, Novi, Michigan, March 26.

Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, presented: a six-part Bible series on the Letter of James, University Christian Outreach, Ann Arbor, January-March; lecture at SHMS for the week of prayer for Christian unity, "Humble Confidence: Our Ecumenical Posture," January 19; a workshop at St. Francis Parish, Ann Arbor, "New Life in the Spirit: Paul's Vision," January 24; a two-talk seminar on personal prayer, Work of Christ Community, Saginaw, Michigan, March 7; a workshop for Lessons from St. Paul for the New Evangelization, SHMS, "St. Paul and the Evangelization of University Students," March 21.

Fr. Todd Lajiness, dean of studies, accompanied the rector to Rome to present to the academic administration of the Angelicum the five-year report on the status of the Aggregation. The Aggregation, approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education, permits SHMS to offer courses for the STB and the STL degree programs. He chaired the joint ATS/HLC visitation team for the comprehensive site-visit for reaccreditation of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, February 8-11, and presented a paper "A Passion for Christ: Pedagogical Considerations for Intellectual Formation in Roman Catholic Seminaries," SHMS faculty colloquia, March 25.

Fr. Gerry LeBoeuf, part-time homiletics instructor and pastor of Guardian Angels Parish, Clawson, Michigan, has been named one of four recipients of the 2008 Fr. John B. Zwers Award by the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools (MANS) Board of Trustees. The award is given to members of the clergy with a strong history of support for, and who articulate the importance of, faith-based schools.

Mr. Ralph Martin, assistant professor of theology, participated in these events: December 13, Lake Orion, Michigan, Catholic Men's Meeting; December 14-15, St. Mary Parish, Swartz Creek, Michigan, parish Evenings of Reflection; January 24, W. Palm Beach, Florida, Catholic Men's Conference; January 31, Washington, D.C., Executive Council Youth Arise International; February 7, Woodside, Virginia, Parish Day of Recollection; February 21, Washington, D.C., Catholic University of America, Young Adult Conference; March 1-5, St. Linus Parish, Dearborn, Michigan, Parish Mission; March 7, Bronx, New York, Divine Mercy Conference; March 14, Providence, Rhode Island, Annual Diocesan Religious Education Conference. His thesis "Lumen Gentium 16: Implications for Evangelization"  as accepted by the pontifical faculty of the Immaculate Conception, Dominican House of Studies, Washington, D.C., for the STL degree.

Dr. Michael J. McCallion, Fr. William Cunningham Chair of Catholic Social Analysis and director of the Institute for Research on the New Evangelization (IRNE), published a review of Barry Hankins' American Evangelicals: A Contemporary History of a Mainstream Religious Movement (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.) and Margaret Poloma and Ralph Hood Jr.'s Blood and Fire: Godly Love in a Pentecostal Emerging Church (New York University Press) CatholicBooksReview.org. He published "Sunday in American Culture: A Sociologist's Perspective," Antiphon: Journal of Liturgical Renewal. A shorter version appeared in the University of Notre Dame's Center for Liturgy November 2008 newsletter. He and Dr. David Maines published "Representations of Faith and the Catholic New Evangelization," New Theology Review, February 2009. He and Dr. Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter received a $20,000 grant from Our Sunday Visitor in March 2009. IRNE will be able to administer and complete a New Evangelization survey in six parishes of the Archdiocese of Detroit and proceed to the next stage of research. They completed three manuscripts now under review at these journals: The Sociological Quarterly, The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and Nova Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions.

Fr. John McDermott, SJ, participated as a consultant in the meeting of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine, Washington, D.C., March 23.

Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development, gave interviews on canonical topics to Our Sunday Visitor, Catholic News Service, National Catholic Register, Catholic New World (Archdiocese of Chicago), Associated Press, Los Angeles Times and Detroit News. He was featured on Catholic Answers Live and The Drew Mariani Show, served as an external referee for a graduate faculty promotion and tenure application, continues working with the Religious Sign Translation Committee of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf, and has been acting chair of the STL Committee.

Sr. Mary Lou Putrow, OP, facilitated a Day of Prayer for pastoral ministers in the Downriver Vicariate, February 18. She presented at SHMS an AOD pastoral formation topic, "Diversity," February 21, and an AOD catechetical topic, "Dynamics of Faith" March 28. She attended the AOD Women's Luncheon and presented St. Paul and Women, and attended the presentation, "When Other Christians Become Catholic," AOD Office of Worship, March 11. Her fourth and final entry for the online Encyclopedia of Christian Educators of the 20th Century on Fr. Robert Hater was published. It may be accessed at www.talbot.edu/ce20.

Mrs. Patricia Rennie, dean of the Institute for Ministry, presented: "The Woman Who Anointed Jesus," Lenten Soup Luncheon, Prince of Peace Parish, West Bloomfield, March 13; Day of Reflection, "Pearl of Great Price: Path of the Caregiver," Mary Reparatrix Retreat House, May 2; reflection, "Soul Sisters: The Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth," Institute for Ministry's Office Personnel Day, May 14.

Dr. Janet E. Smith, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics, presented: "Aquinas as a Commentator on Aristotle's Ethics," course at Santa Croce University, Rome, December 15-19; "Organ Transplantation and Embryo Adoption," conference on organ transplants, University of St Thomas, Houston, March 28; "Fraternal Correction," Lessons from St. Paul for the New Evangelization, SHMS, March 21 (two sessions); "Modern vs. Traditional View of the Health Care Professional," Badlands Right to Life, Dickenson, North Dakota, March 2 (three talks); "Conscious Parenthood," Santa Croce University, December 17. She gave talks on Humanae Vitae, the Culture of Life and various bioethical issues: Badlands Right to Life, March 1-2 (2 talks); Evangelization Day, St. Mary Parish, Westphalia, Michigan, March 14 (3 talks); Edith Stein Conference, February 14 (2 talks); Love Makes All Things Possible Conference, Rockville, Minnesota, January 31 (3 talks); Pro-Life Summit, Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor, January 10; St. Mary Seminary, Winona, Minnesota, December 4.
