Former Sacred Heart rector Bishop Allen Vigneron was graciously welcomed by his new diocese of Oakland, California, at a Welcoming Mass and Reception on February 26. St. Elizabeth Church in Oakland hosted the event, since the diocese' cathedral had to be demolished after a 1989 earthquake. Members of the Sacred Heart community flew to California to celebrate along with the bishop.
Pope John Paul II named Bishop Vigneron coadjutor bishop of Oakland in January. He will succeed current Oakland Bishop John Cummins later this year when Bishop Cummins retires.
