Sacred Heart Hosts
"Recovery from Racism" Training

Fr. Clarence Williams, cpps, director of African American ministries for the Archdiocese of Detroit, has been working against racism for the past thirty years. Every year, he holds a training workshop for the internationally known program, "Recovery from Racism."

Two seminarians, Virgilio Guerra, a second-year college student from the Diocese of Kalamazoo, and Terry Bennis, a second-year theology student from the Diocese of Gary, as well as MAPS student Kelly Reay-Harris, participated in the Recov-ery from Racism facilitator training sessions held at SHMS. Other attendees came from throughout the archdiocese, and from the Dioceses of Toledo and Lansing.

The training session was conducted on April 11-13, in preparation for the May "Racial Sobriety" conference. Parti-cipants of the April training sessions are then prepared to facilitate at the conference, incorporating presentations and small group discussions.

"Sacred Heart Major Seminary has been very supportive of the work as the training center for the Racial Sobriety movement," said Father Clarence, who is the founder and director of RFR. "It is important for priests and lay ministers to realize the issues about racial dysfunction because of the racial diversity of the congregants seated in the pews. Seeing each as brother and sister is the meaning of racial sobriety."
