What's New With the Faculty?
Dr. Philip Blosser, professor of philosophy, chaired a panel on "The Role of Philosophical Anthropology in Priestly Formation" and presented a paper, "The Challenge of Modern Science for Traditional Catholic Philosophical Anthropology," Symposium on Philosophy and Priestly Formation, Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, May 24-25. He published reviews of Retrieving the Natural Law: A Return to Moral First Things, by J. Daryl Charles, Critical Issues in Bioethics series (Eerdmans, 2008), in National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly (Spring 2010); Selves: An Essay in Revisionist Metaphysics, by Galen Strawson (Clarendon Press, 2009), in CHOICE Current Review for Academic Libraries (April 2010); Good and Evil Actions: A Journey through Saint Thomas Aquinas, by Steven J. Fr. Michael Byrnes, vice rector and dean of formation, co-presented two sessions of the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds program to priests of the Dioceses of New Ulm, Minnesota, and Sacramento, California. He participated in the conference "A Necessary Conversation: A Gathering of Experts," which explored the use of the psychological sciences in seminary formation. The conference was hosted by St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and the St. John Vianney Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Fr. Richard Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, in conjunction with his sabbatical project of a commentary on St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians, attended the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas conference, Berlin, Germany, at the end of July. The Munz Kabinett of the Bode Museum of Berlin is a rich respository for Roman coins that pertain to Philippi. Several of these portray the Roman emperors as divine and such inscriptions may well have galvanized St. Paul to write that only Jesus is Lord. Permission has been given to Father Cassidy to reproduce these coins in his forthcoming commentary.
Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, professor of spirituality and systematic theology, presented her newly published book, Weaving Faith and Experience, and an overview of the Call to Holiness Series on Women's Spirituality, Holy Name Parish, Birmingham, Michigan, May 10. She gave radio interviews for promotion of her book: Catholic Radio, Detroit, May 7; Spirit Catholic Radio Network, June 2; Relevant Radio, June 10; and Real Life Radio, June 24. She received the Founder's Lifetime Achievement Award, Life Directions, a non-profit organization for at risk youth and young adults, June 16.
Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy, published "The Reformed Objection to Natural Theology: A Catholic Response to Herman Bavinck," Calvin Theological Journal 45 (2010).

Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, presented "The Eucharist and the Big Picture," Eucharistic Conference at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth, June 5; preached a retreat for the Basilian fathers of Detroit and Windsor, Holly, Michigan, on the theme of priestly holiness, June 7-10; taught a course, "The Paschal Mystery," Missionaries of Charity, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, June 12-19; and attended a course by the Annunciation Institute, "Formation in the Theological and Cardinal Virtues," St. John Neumann Parish, Canton, July 19-23.
Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, presented "The Purpose of Ecumenism," Ann Arbor Christian Singles Group, April 18; submitted proofs for publication of St. Thomas Aquinas' Commentary on the Gospel of John (Catholic University of America Press), April 30; presented "Christian Spirituality for Men," University Christian Outreach men's night, May 20; attended Academy of Catholic Theology Conference, Washington, D.C., May 25-27; spoke on "Justice and Generosity," Christ the King Parish Men's Retreat, June 4; spoke on "The Peace that Christ Gives," St. Paul, Minnesota, July 7; and led a workshop on discipleship, St. Paul's Outreach, July 10.
Fr. Todd Lajiness, dean of studies, attended the annual convention by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association on the changes to the processes for comprehensive accreditation visits. He accompanied seminarians to Mexico for the full immersion language and cultural program; participated in the Michigan State Convention for the Knights of Columbus; began new duties for a two-year term as state chaplain for the Knights of Columbus; and attended the ATS biennial meeting for the Graduate School of Theology at Sacred Heart.
Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology, continued teaching a spring graduate course "Foundations of the Christian Moral Life" as adjunct professor, University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. He published "Caritas in Veritate" and "Sin (Theology of)," an update of a 1967 article, New Catholic Encyclopedia Supplement 2010, Robert Fastiggi (ed.). He started a blog on Facebook that treats moral, cultural, and political topics; reviewed a manuscript on bioethics for Springer; and just completed twenty years of teaching at Sacred Heart in July.

Fr. Earl Muller, SJ, Bishop Kevin M. Britt Chair of Christology, published "A Distinctive Feature of Early Roman Angelomorphic Christology," Studia Patristica XLV (Peeters, 2010). He presented a paper "'What . . . whom do you seek?': A Johannine Theme against a Septuagintal Background," for the "John's Gospel and the Old Testament" Task Force, Catholic Biblical Association annual meeting, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California, July 31-August 3. He was in Tanzania (for the fifth year) giving a retreat to priests in Mbinga and preaching at rallies in Mbinga and Mbeya, July 8-23.
Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development, was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to a five-year term as Referendary of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. He is the first lay consultant to be appointed to the Church's highest court since its reconstitution in 1909, and is the only American among the twelve canonists so serving. He has been an expert witness for the defense of civil law suits filed against the Holy See in the wake of the clergy sexual abuse scandal; was appointed by Archbishop Allen Vigneron to serve a two-year term on the Archdiocesan Worship Commission; gave interviews on canonical topics to the National Catholic Reporter, National Catholic News Service and Al Kresta of WDEO Radio; and provided canonical research guidance to scholars and institutions nationally and abroad.

Fr. Daniel Trapp, associate professor of systematic theology, liturgy and sacraments, led the spiritual formation part of the seminary's annual pilgrimage to the Holy Land in May. Dr. Peter S. Williamson, Adam Cardinal Maida Chair in Sacred Scripture, completed a twenty-four week study of the Book of Revelation )available online at CatholicMenToday.org), Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor, April 18. He went to China May 3-21 where he presented: ten talks on Ephesians to lay people in Hebei province; lectures on "Scripture in the Formation and Life of a Priest" to seminary communities in Shijiazhuang and Beijing; a mini-course introducing the Bible and Acts of the Apostles to seminarians at the National Seminary; and spiritual conferences to novices of the Sisters of Holy Hope in Xian Xian province. He presented "Feeding on the Words of God," Thomas a'Becket Parish, Canton, May 26; fielded Bible questions, Star of the Sea Parish, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, June 2; and spoke on "Husbands, Love Your Wives," Knights of Columbus of Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor, July 20. He participated in the Castelot Scripture Conference, June 22-23, and helped launch the Catholic Biblical School of Michigan, serving as chairman of the board and doing radio interviews with Al Kresta and Teresa Tomeo on WDEO, July 2 and 7. He participated in the National Catholic Bible Conference, Denver, Colorado, presenting from Ephesians "Building the Body of Christ," "Husbands, Wives and Ephesians Five" and "Living as Children of Light," July 16-17.
