College of Liberal Arts Seminarian Admissions

Anyone interested in enrolling at SHMS as a candidate for the Catholic priesthood must first contact the Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Detroit at (313) 237-5875 or the Vocation Office of his home diocese or religious institute. The appropriate vocation Officer collaborates with the seminary during an applicant's admission process.

Admission of seminarians to the Bachelor of Arts curriculum is the responsibility of the undergraduate seminarians admissions committee. When an applicant is deficient in meeting a criterion for admission, the committee may admit him on probation.

Bachelor of Arts Requirements

  • For freshman, a high school diploma showing graduation with a 2.5 GPA on a 4-point system or a GED score of at least 50.
  • For transferring students, in addition to the above, a college GPA of 2.5 on a 4- point system.
  • Satisfactory ACT or SAT scores. (ACT scores are preferred.)
  • A minimum high school involvement in a college preparatory program.
  • Official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended sent from these institutions to the SHMS Registrar's Office.
  • Application forms and fees.
  • Certificates of Baptism and Confirmation recently issued with seals.
  • Report from physical exam.
  • Psychological assessment.
  • Letters of recommendation (pastor, vocation director, etc.).
  • Evaluations and recommendations from any seminary previously attended and from any religious institute the applicant may have joined.

Bachelor of Philosophy Requirements

  • A bachelor degree or its equivalent (which includes demonstrated competency in oral communication, writing and research, and a course in psychology or sociology).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended sent from these institutions to the SHMS Registrar.
  • Application forms and fees.
  • Certificates of Baptism and Confirmation recently issued with seals.
  • Report from physical exam.
  • Psychological assessment.
  • Letters of recommendation (pastor, vocation director, etc.).
  • Evaluations and recommendations from any seminary previously attended and from any religious institute the applicant may have joined.
