Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy - Seminarians (A.B.)

Purpose
The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide an undergraduate liberal arts degree in a four-year format with a major in philosophy.


Course of Study Goals

General Education
General Education Course Guidelines

  1. Students are capable of reading and listening, writing and speaking with acumen.
  2. Students are capable of inquiry, i.e., thinking logically and abstractly, and analyzing critically.
  3. Students know the cultural heritage, ancient and modern, that belongs to them and their fellow citizens.
  4. Students have a capacity for exploring the life and problems of their own communities and other societies and nations.
  5. Students understand the basic principles and practices of the way the natural sciences and technology approach reality.
  6. Students appreciate the fundamental principles of mathematics and understand the way mathematics is applied in science and everyday life.
  7. Students assess human activities and endeavors according to a transcendent standard of objective and universal truth.

Philosophy and Theology

  1. Students achieve a level of competence in Latin that will allow them access to the witnesses to Christian tradition who have written in that language.
  2. Students achieve a basic level of competence in a pastoral modern language.
  3. Students know the fundamental elements of Catholic Christian life and belief presented in The Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  4. Students possess through philosophical studies a true and consistent knowledge of God, world and human nature—one that both integrates what they have learned in general education and complements Christian revelation.
  5. Students possess a knowledge of philosophy commensurate with the requirements for the graduate study of theology according to the norms of the Roman Catholic Church.
  6. Students, through the capstone seminar, synthesize their educational experience in an organized refl ective manner by demonstrating their actual integration of the major disciplines.

** Commuter students may substitute 6 credit hours of electives with permission of the academic advisor.

Electives (9  credit hours)
Students must take sufficient elective courses to meet the graduation requirement. Students are counseled to choose elective courses according to a plan of study which will help them achieve their personal goals for their undergraduate education.

Students may take courses not offered at SHMS through the Detroit Area Catholic Higher Education Consortium offerings.


Program Requirements
  1. A minimum of 120 credit hours must be earned through completion of the course of study.
  2. Minimum of 30 credit hours must be earned in residence at SHMS.
  3. Students must maintain a C average (2.0) for the required 120 semester hours.
  4. Students must maintain a C average (2.0) for the courses earned in philosophy.
